2013 TV Meme

Which TV shows did you start watching in 2013?

Hannibal, Once Upon A Time In Wonderland, Graceland, The Following, Person of Interest, Sleepy Hollow, The Blacklist, Almost Human, Agents of SHIELD, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Originals, Orphan Black, Avatar: TLA

Which TV shows did you let go of in 2013?

Graceland - I was out as soon as I realised that the show was going to allow Briggs to get off scot free for the ridiculous lengths he went to get revenge on the cartel enforcer who hooked him on drugs.
Hannibal - It’s a very well-written and well-acted show but it often felt like misery porn and I found that incredibly unappealing. I also found most of the characters to be incredibly off-putting.
Nikita - I lost interest mid-season 3, I’ll probably come back to it at some point.
Community - Lost interest several episodes into Season 4, will probably watch Season 5 now that Dan Harmon is back in charge.
Once Upon A Time in Wonderland - It feels distinctly average to me and I don’t have the time to watch a show that’s just okay.
The Vampire Diaries - This remains to be seen, I haven’t watched the last two episodes yet but I’m not that bothered either.

2012 TV Meme

Which TV shows did you start watching in 2012?

Justified, Community, Legend of Korra (still haven’t finished the season), Nikita, Homeland

Which TV shows did you let go of in 2012?

For the sake of brevity I’m not including shows that I watched a few episodes of but didn't continue with for one reason or another. Nor am I including shows I love that ended as I will never let them go.

I stopped watching Glee because Season 3 was leaving me legitimately angry at the end of an episode and that’s not why I watch TV.

The Secret Circle was the exact opposite of The Vampire Diaries, slow, dull and the lead actress was thoroughly unconvincing as an evil version of herself.

I got sick and tired of the blatant Windows advertising in Hawaii Five-0. (Though ironically the same week I stopped watching NCIS had an incredibly obvious shot of a Windows phone. Don’t make me stop watching all your procedural's CBS!)

With True Blood, Boardwalk Empire and Covert Affairs I simply lost interest, there’s no other way to explain it. When it came to watch a new episode it felt more like a chore than something I was genuinely interested in.

Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2012? Why?

Gravity Falls and Adventure Time, I've seen the odd episode but I just haven't had the time.

Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2013?

SHIELD because I can't imagine a reality where it isn't fantastic.

Crossbones because it's written by Neil Cross who created Luther and it stars Hugh Laurie as Blackbeard.

Dracula because say what you want about The Tudors historical accuracy (and I do) but Jonathan Rhys Meyers was always an interesting screen presence and I'm curious how he'll portray the Vampire of Vampires.

Hannibal because while I was reticent about even more Lecter (nothing is as good as Silence of the Lambs) Bryan Fuller has a solid track record and it has Laurence Fishburne in it.

The Following stars Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy so I'm sold.

Cult has the potential to be interesting on a metatextual level so I'm on-board for at least the pilot.

I love the Powers comic though I am seriously behind so if the show finally gets off the ground I'll watch it.

The Americans looks like an interesting spin on the spy show so I definitely plan on checking it out.

Which TV show impressed you least in 2012?

Glee. Just Glee.

Which TV show did you enjoy the most in 2012?

This is difficult because Justified, Community and Nikita are all shows I binged on existing multiple seasons of so they have a numerical advantage. I think it would have to be between Justified and Nikita because they are both shows that I also watch with my Dad.

Pointless BtVS Canonical Grumbling

Today, looking at a photoset I was reminded of one of my longstanding bugbears in regards to Spike’s characterisation.

He’s a Manchester United fan.

While Spike meets the sole qualififcation for being a Man Utd fan (he’s from anywhere other than Manchester) and I understand why Whedon chose that club as Americans are likely to have at least heard of Man Utd, I don’t buy it.

Spike spent a lot of time and effort creating his persona of a working class, anarchist punk brawler who lives for the moment. I just don’t see him being a supporter of a club that is more of a global brand than a football team*. Plus, he’s a Londoner and I think he’s much more likely to support one of the dozen local teams.

Personally I think he’s much more likely to support either West Ham, Fulham or Millwall.

*For example he’s definitely one of those fans who complains about foreign billionaires buying up British Football teams and trying to buy their way to Championship gold.

Books Read 2011

I freely admit it wasn't exactly a year of wide variety:

Furies of Calderon - Jim Butcher
Heat Wave - 'Richard Castle'
Frostbitten - Kelley Armstrong
Academ's Fury - Jim Butcher
Cursor's Fury - Jim Butcher
Captain's Fury - Jim Butcher
Princeps Fury - Jim Butcher
Ghost Story - Jim Butcher
Spider-Man: The Darkest Hours - Jim Butcher
Jingo - Terry Pratchett
Thud! - Terry Pratchett

The total's up on last year but I'm still disappointed that I wasn't able to read more, here's hoping 2012 is a better year!

Writer's Block: B.Y.O.B. Holidays

What is your must-see holiday movie? One random answer will win a $50 Amazon gift card. [Details here]

Being British I know I'm supposed to say The Great Escape but honestly I'd have to say The Nightmare Before Christmas or Jumanji.
I’ve been rethinking my DVD strategy (mainly due to lack of space) and I’ve decided that I don’t need to own every film I vaguely even sort of like. Here’s what I’m getting rid of so far:

Some of them are going to my parents, the rest to charity. There might be some more additions once I get round to re-watching or watching for the first time some of the other films I own.

The problem is, I know I own some genuinely terrible films (I don’t think you’ll find anyone arguing Jason X, Crank or Final Destination are high points of cinema.) but they are hilariously entertaining and I will doubtlessly watch them again at some point.

*I got a boxset of his stand-up DVDs last Christmas and haven’t found anyone to offload this copy to.

Books Read 2010

Apparently keeping track of the number of books I've read is having the exact opposite effect I intended and I am reading fewer books with each passing year.

The Steel Remains by Richard Morgan
Changes by Jim Butcher
Bad Science by Dr. Ben Goldacre
The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie
A Cool Head by Ian Rankin
Star Trek: Titan - A Torrent Sea by Christopher L. Bennett
Making Money by Terry Pratchett
Star Wars: Allegiance by Timothy Zahn
Star Trek: TNG - Losing The Peace by William Leisner
Unseen Academicals by Terry Pratchett

I read 14 books in 2008, 12 in 2009 and 10 in 2010, hopefully I can put an end to this pattern this year but so far I have not got off to a good start as I have currently only finished one book.
